Single Cylinder Miniature Internal Combustion Engine Coming Soon | Stirlingkit

A single cylinder engine is a type of internal combustion engine that consists of a single piston, cylinder, and combustion chamber. It is a simple and compact design that is commonly used in small engines, such as those found in motorcycles, lawn mowers, and generators. We released the ENJOMOR 10cc Whippet Flathead Water-cooled 4 stroke Gasoline Engine in November 2021 and here is another single cylinder engine model coming soon.

You can check the ENJOMOR 10cc Whippet Flathead Water-cooled Gasoline Engine below and look back on the previous blog.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. M1 is not the final product number and the name is not confirmed yet. We just share some information day by day to attract people's attention. Our plan is : day 1 is to share the features of the engine, day 2 is to share the background of the engine, day 3 is to share the faq of this engine. sorry for the misunderstanding. Salute to the great Edgar T. Westbury.
Part 1: Prototype engine

ETW published the design for the "Kittiwake" engine in 1944 after conducting extensive testing. In his book on Model Petrol Engines, he claimed that it was a development of the 1935 Kiwi Mk 1. However, this claim is somewhat misleading, as the design actually dates back to 1930 and the components of the "Kittiwake" engine were based on an original and delicate geo. Kennion blueprint.

The blueprint featured ball bearings and a wet sump, which were improvements over the Kiwi engine. The castings were intended for a water-cooled engine, although the blueprint depicted an air-cooled version. The engine boasted a finely crafted V-arrangement for the pushrod-operated overhead valves.

In a 1944 issue of Model Engineer (ME 2275), ETW described the "Kittiwake" engine as a 15cc air-cooled model. In my opinion, this is one of Edgar Westbury's most aesthetically pleasing designs. The engine is well-made and turns over smoothly. Unfortunately, it sustained damage while on display when it was dropped onto the rocker cover. This serves as a reminder that engines should be used regularly to keep them in good condition. Despite being a bit fiddly to repair, it is worth the effort as "Kittiwake" engines are becoming increasingly rare. It was  designed for and used in Hydroplane Tether Boats. You can read more about the application of his engines.

We made the replica of this retro engine and several changes,  like our CISON v-twin Panhead & Panhead motorcycle engine models.  We have considered making a water-cooled structure before, however,  there may be insufficient space since it has a built-in oil pump already and add a built-in water pump with a large flow rate and water channel. Therefore, it is designed to be added to the cylinder barrel and cylinder head. More heat sinks are added, but users who like water cooling can add an external water pump to work with the engine later)  It will be considered to make it easier to change the engine to water cooling, or the easiest way to use a separate water pump and external water cooling.

Part 3 Why this single cylinder engine? What are the highlights?

When it comes to material selection, the FV1A engine uses only the highest quality metal materials, mainly aluminum alloy, brass, and steel. The workmanship is of excellent quality, with the main body manufactured by CNC and the cylinder head/middle cylinder and other components cast. The one-piece crankshaft is quenched and hardened, while the special metal steel piston ring is treated with anodic oxidation or electrophoretic coloring on the surface, showing the retro industrial mechanical texture of the engine.

One of the key features of the FV1A engine is its exquisite appearance. The engine boasts a unique and beautiful green + black color matching, with an OHV valve train and a compact structure. The engine parts have raw and very refined geometry, with a fine V-arrangement for pushrod-operated overhead valves. This clever design ensures that the engine is not only aesthetically pleasing but also built to perform.

The FV1A engine delivers on all fronts. With a displacement of 7cc, bore of 20.0mm and stroke of 22.5mm, this engine is capable of achieving speeds of 1800-6000 rpm, while producing about 0.5ps of power. The long-stroke design, high torque output, and specially designed power output performance make it an ideal choice for seaplane tethered boat models.

Speaking of its air-cooled structure, it is common in many applications, air-cooled engines offer a number of advantages in certain situations. Air-cooled engines tend to be lighter and more compact than water-cooled engines, which makes them a good choice for applications where space is limited or weight is a concern. Additionally, air-cooled engines are less complex than water-cooled engines, which can make them easier to maintain and repair.

Stirlingkit is dedicated to providing the best scale engine models for engine enthusiasts. We are passionate about lowering the barriers for engine hobbyists to access scale models, and we welcome professionals, hobbyists, DIY builders, artists, teenagers, and everyone else who shares our passion for engine building. Our community is diverse and inclusive, and we are committed to bringing people together from all walks of life and skill levels. We believe that by nurturing a love for engine building in young people, we can help to ensure the continued growth of this rewarding hobby for years to come. So we prefer to design this single cylinder engine model as air cooled one to be more accepted by beginners. We will upload a reference video to show how to assemble, tune, disassemble the engine.

At the same time, we have large-area heat sink to ensure good and sufficient air-cooled heat dissipation effect and it can be considered to add an external water pump to work with the engine, we will also provide a concept map for the modification of water-cooled one.

One of the main challenges of designing this an air-cooled engine is managing the heat generated by the engine's operation. To address this challenge, the engine is designed with a number of heat sinks that help to dissipate heat away from the engine's critical components. These heat sinks are located on the cylinder barrel and cylinder head, where they can be most effective at managing heat.

The unique carburetor and ignition breaker assemblies of this engine are also noteworthy, as they are designed to be efficient and reliable. These components are essential to the engine's operation, as they ensure that the proper mixture of fuel and air is delivered to the engine's combustion chamber at the right time. The carburetor is responsible for mixing fuel and air in the proper proportions, while the ignition breaker assembly ensures that the fuel-air mixture is ignited at the right moment to produce maximum power.

Its fuel versatility also features. It can run on a variety of fuels, including gasoline and kerosene. In terms of fuel compatibility, this engine is designed to run on gasoline, kerosene, and methanol, which makes it a versatile choice for a wide range of applications. This feature is especially useful for users who need to switch between fuels depending on availability, cost, or environmental considerations.

In terms of its dimensions, the engine measures 100mm x 70mm x 133mm. It features a bore of 20mm and a stroke of 22mm. These dimensions make it a compact and lightweight engine that can be used in a variety of applications.

One of the key features of this engine is its OHV valve train, which stands for Overhead Valve. This means that the engine has its valves located in the cylinder head, rather than in the block, which is a common configuration for smaller engines. This design allows for better airflow and combustion, resulting in improved performance, increased fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.

The independent lubrication system ensures that the engine is properly lubricated at all times. This system includes a built-in oil pump, which circulates oil throughout the engine to prevent wear and tear, reduce friction, and increase the engine's lifespan. This feature is especially important for engines that are used in harsh environments, as it can help prevent damage caused by contaminants, such as dirt, debris, and water.

It has been a must-have for anyone looking to take their engine model game to the next level. So why wait? Preorder your FV1A engine today and experience the power and performance of this extraordinary engine for yourself!

Part 4 How is the quality? What we have done for this engine?

To ensure the quality of the FV1A engine, there are specific standards that should be considered.

When it comes to evaluating the quality of a single cylinder four-stroke engine model like the FV1A engine, there are several key standards that should be considered. These include the engine's design, power output, cooling and lubrication systems, ignition method, material selection, and manufacturing process.

First and foremost, the design of the engine should be well-thought-out and efficient. The FV1A engine, with its vertical single cylinder and OHV valve train, has a compact and clever design that maximizes its performance while minimizing its size and weight. The V-arrangement for the pushrod-operated overhead valves is a particularly fine detail that speaks to the precision and attention to detail in the engine's design.

Of course, a good engine design is only as good as its power output. The FV1A engine's long-stroke design and high torque output make it a powerful choice for seaplane tethered boat models. Its maximum power output of about 0.5ps is not particularly high, but it is more than sufficient for the engine's intended use.

Another important aspect of engine performance is its cooling and lubrication systems. The FV1A engine uses air cooling and an independent lubrication system with a built-in oil pump and wet oil pan. The large-area heat sink ensures that the engine stays cool even at high speeds, while the independent lubrication system ensures that the engine is well-lubricated for maximum performance and longevity.

The ignition method is also an important consideration when evaluating engine quality. The FV1A engine uses a unique ignition circuit breaker assembly (mechanical external ignition) that ensures reliable and efficient ignition, even under challenging conditions. The anti-spill carburetor is another clever feature that ensures smooth and consistent fuel delivery.

When it comes to material selection, high-quality metals like aluminum alloy, brass, and steel are critical for ensuring the engine's durability and performance. The FV1A engine uses these materials judiciously, with the main body manufactured using CNC technology and the cylinder head and middle cylinder possibly cast. The one-piece crankshaft is quenched and hardened for maximum strength, while the special metal steel piston ring is treated with anodic oxidation or electrophoretic coloring to enhance its appearance and texture.

The manufacturing process is also an important aspect of engine quality. The FV1A engine's workmanship is of excellent quality, with attention paid to every detail of the manufacturing process. The engine is carefully assembled using high-quality materials and modern manufacturing techniques, resulting in an engine that is both reliable and aesthetically pleasing. The engine's workmanship must be of excellent quality. The manufacturing process should be precise, and the engine's parts must be assembled correctly to ensure that the engine runs smoothly.
