What's Hit and Miss Engine?

A hit-and-miss engine is a type of four-stroke internal combustion engine that is controlled by a governor to operate at a set speed. It was conceived in the late 19th century and produced by various companies from the 1890s through approximately the 1940s. The name comes from the speed control on these engines: they fire ("hit") only when operating at or below a set speed, and cycle without firing ("miss") when they exceed their set speed. This is as compared to the "throttle governed" method of speed control. The sound made when the engine is running without a load is a distinctive "POP whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh POP" as the engine fires and then coasts until the speed decreases and it fires again to maintain its average speed.

Features:
1, STABLE STRUCTURE: The engine can be disassembled and can be used for DIY , the structure design is stable, and the surface has anti-rust treatment.
2, SIMPLE OPERATION: Place the engine on a lug boss, leave the wheel in a suspended state, inject gasoline or diesel or kerosene into the single cylinder, and then manually rotate the wheel (may take two or three attempts) and the engine will start. It is very convenient to observe the principle of the engine.
3, PRIORITY GIFT OPTION FOR MANY APPLICATIONS: The engine has a wide range of application as, great gift for teacher’s Demo props on the class, birthday gift for friends, families, parents, etc. or can be used as home or office ornaments.

I love this thing

I run it off of methanol and top end lube with a little scent added to help regulate the temperature, when compared to gasoline methanol works better with it having a fuel mixer. It can run for over an hour straight with a full tank of methanol. I plan to make a mini homemade ice cream maker with it. great engine for someone that loves a good deal

This is great!

very well made great engine. Takes a bit of work to get it going, but the patience paid off. I made a starter drive to fit on my rechargeable drill, it helps enormously with the starting.

Stirling Hit and miss

Out of the box what a great little engine. Not the best they sell but bang for your buck it's a fun little runner and great display piece. This is also a great piece for a child to learn how a hit and miss engine works. If you are looking to get into these engine for very little money I recommend this one. You can always move up from there.

Not so good

The engine appears to be well machined but keep in mind that if you break something or something wears out that parts are not available. Mine never ran quite right to begin with. There was a leak with the exhaust valve which I managed to fix. Recently the engine was dropped damaging the head beyond repair. I cannot find a replacement cylinder head. I sent an email to Stirling but have not heard back so basically junk at this point.
